Common Q & A

How do I find foods quickly?

Click on the “List of All Foods”. This will give you an outline of all the categories and foods. This way you can see how the general catagories are listed and which food is under which catagory. You can also press the mini-magnifyng glass, to the right of where you enter in your food. Simply type in your food you are looking for and the program will tell you if it is in the program. See below:

How does the Speedometer work?

This feature will give you quick feedback where you are regarding fat burning or fat storing. The greater the dial goes to the right, the greater fat burning. The greater the dial goes to the left, the greater your body is making fat. It shows you the current weight and your goal with the middle display showing how many pounds you lost.
If you press “Display Details” you can get the rating of each categories. The higher the number, the better the score – 100 being the best possible score. The worst score is 0.
You can change the sound effects by going to “Site Settings” in the My Account Tab

Why do I start the Liver Enhancement first?

Because all fat burning hormones work through the liver. Through strengthening the liver first, a person will lose more weight in the long run. This program also allows a person to find out if they are more of a liver/thyroid versus adrenal/ovary. If you lose weight on this initial program, you will continue with it until your body signals that you need more protein. The next step will be the Liver/Thyroid diet. Go to the Educational Tab for more details.

What is my plan and what do I eat?

There is two ways to use this program. You can just start eating and let the program correct you through its recommendations. The program will show bar graphs which will tell you how close or how far way you are from where you should be. Everyone starts with the Liver Enhancement, regardless of what body type you are. Then you will transition to the appropriate diet after two weeks. If you do very well, continue with the Liver Enhancement as long as possible. Click the Educational Tab to learn more about what to eat.

What do I eat if I’m a mixed body type?

Most people are. Everyone starts with the Liver Enhancement and based on the results you transition to another diet. If you do poorly, you will change to the adrenal/ovary diet and if you do well you will stay on the Liver Enhancement or transition to the Liver/Thyroid diet. You really do not need to know your body to type to get started. Let the program tell you based on the results.

How do I figure out amounts of foods?

Click on the button on the Log Tab – see below

You will get this chart by clicking on “Amount of Food Examples”.

It doesn’t have to be exactly perfect. Use your judgment to get an estimate. Counting calories is not part of this program. We are focused on the hormone influences of food. The amount of food is less important than the type of food.

What if I can’t find a food I've eaten?

Make sure you first click on the “List of All Foods” to make sure it’s not already present. It might take a bit to get used to finding foods.

If you still can not find the food you are eating, press the “Cannot find certain food?” button and enter in the food. Admin personal will add the food.

How do I cancel my subscription?

Simply press the cancel button in the Status box (within the Log Tab).

It will bring you to the Account Tab; where you can cancel your subscription.

I have concerns about the Liver Enhancement...

The Liver Enhancement is very low on animal protein. Some body types will require more protein. The questions in the begining of your Log Info Tab will quickly let you know when you need to start adding animal proteins into your diet.

How do I change the Speedometer sound?

You can change the sound by going to “Site Settings” within My Account Tab.

How do I get my report?

This will depend on the frequency your Health Coach sets for your account. It will be either every 3 or 7 days. You will receive an email when a report is ready for you to review. The report will be in the Report Tab.

How do I read my reports?

There are recommendations below each graph within the Report Tab. Simply click on the current dates in the Report box to view your reports.

Where can I make suggestions?

If you are under the “Do It Yourself”, you do not have access to the dialog with a practitioner, however, you can make suggestions. This is located within the Dialog Tab.

How can I make changes if I make a mistake within the food log?

Simply press the date within your calendar in the Log Tab, pull up the day and make the changes. Once you press Update Info, the graphs and recommendations will be re-calculated.

What if I forget to fill it out?

You can simply go back in the calendar and press the date you missed and fill it in. The program will automatically update your information.

How do I change my basic information?

Go to the My Account Tab and press “edit profile”.

How do I upgrade to the Practitioner-Supervised version or downgrade to Do It Yourself?

Go to My Account Tab and press Subscription Info button in the upper left hand corner. You can then press Change Plan button to upgrade or downgrade to which ever plan you want.

How do I ask a question in the Dialog box?

This function only works in the “Practitioner-Supervised” version. Go to the Dialog Tab and press New Topic. This communication will be sent to your practitioner. When you get a reply, you will see NEW next to the communication, then once it is opened the NEW will disappear. This way you can easily track your questions and answers.

What is the main difference between this Web-based weight-loss program and other Web-based weight-loss programs?

Other Web-based programs monitor calories, which are, in Dr. Berg's opinion, insignificant compared to the potential fat-burning influences of hormones. Hormones are one of the senior controlling mechanisms of metabolism. He created this program to educate you on the potential hormonal influences of what you eat, drink and do, specifically as they relate to fat burning.

What is the relationship between hormones and fat?

Adipose tissue is stored fuel. The storage and release of this fuel is regulated and controlled principally by hormones. Hormones can be looked at as mini keys to unlock fat.

What is the relationship between food/exercise/activities and hormones?

Various things can stimulate hormones. Different foods and drinks can stimulate fat-burning or fat-storing hormones. Exercise can also stimulate fat-burning hormones.

Stress can stimulate hormones. The absence of food (fasting, cutting calories, missing a meal) can influence hormones.

What are the hormone graphs based upon?

Within the anatomy and physiology textbooks as well as endocrinology texts, there are explanations as to what stimulates and inhibits fat-burning hormones. Dr. Berg has done a comprehensive summary of how these things can influence metabolism. He has taken each food, drink and activity and assigned it a number as close as he could to what is described in these materials. When you enter your information, the computer program mathematically graphs the potential effects of foods, drink and activities.

How was this program developed and how accurate are the hormone-food-activity graphs?

The fat-burning and fat-storing hormones are not actual hormonal levels. Without doing blood tests, it would be a difficult task to determine the exact hormone flows from every single food, drink and activity in each individual body. These graphs show possible influences. The program is an educational process to help guide you toward weight loss and better health.

The mathematical formulas were created based on the amount of hormonal stimulus from each food, exercise and activity and incorporated into the Web-based program. Graphs can now be plotted to determine and educate you on the possible fat-burning and fat-storing effects of these hormones based on what you eat, drink and do. For example: In a healthy body, drinking 8 ounces of juice affects insulin (fat-storing hormone) quite a bit more than eating an egg (protein). However, an egg can stimulate a fat-burning hormone, whereas a concentrated sugar will usually not stimulate this hormone in a healthy body.

The real test of this program will be when you lose weight and improve your health.

Do these graphs actually measure my hormones?

No. This can only be done through lab tests. Your physician can do this. This program is not measuring your actual hormones. We are looking at the influences of how your food, drink and activities influence fat-burning and fat-storing hormones. Look at this program as an educational process. This program doesn't give guarantees of weight loss, as each body is different and has a different metabolic rate.

What if I do not lose weight?

If a person has major problems with stress, proteins in the muscles (thighs and buttocks) can be broken down and turned into sugar. This sugar is then turned into fat around the abdomen. Some people actually gain weight before they lose weight because the body has to build muscle first, and muscle is heavier than fat. Some of our patients lose inches, increase energy and have better digestion, yet will see no initial weight loss. After these muscles are repaired, I have found that weight loss is easier.

How much weight loss is possible per week?

There are two types of weight problems: (1) water and (2) fat. The maximum fat that can be burned per week is between 1 and 2 pounds. That's it. The maximum water loss is unlimited. This would explain how some people can lose and gain several pounds within days. Anyone can do any diet and lose water weight, but the true test is how much real fat they can lose. This program is designed to do precisely that. It also emphasizes the sodium and potassium food ratios. If you're only losing 1 to 2 pounds per week, it might not be a bad thing; it might actually be a normal thing. And it is important to understand this so you don't get discouraged. Better indicators for improvement would be energy level, sleep quality, digestion and reduced cravings, as these tell us - the body is healing.

Why don't you consider calories within this program?

Calories, which are the units of energy in foods, are rather insignificant, in my opinion, compared to the hormone influence of foods and activities. Let me explain. Let's take fat. Fat has high calories compared to other foods, but fat does NOT stimulate fat-storing hormones. It's rather neutral. Whereas carbohydrates like breads or pasta can trigger fat-storing hormones. Cutting calories can cause long-term weight gain by stimulating a stress hormone, cortisol, which releases sugar in the blood and triggers insulin to change this sugar into fat. That is why some people who go on a low-calorie diet gain weight down the road. If you evaluate your foods and activities from this point of view, it is my opinion you will be more successful with weight loss.

If I'm searching around the site , how do I get back to my Food Log?

Simply press "Log Info" and you will brought back to your main Log Tab.

How do I know if my selection of food is in the program?

When you enter in your food, to the far right you'll see a magnifying glass. Press it and type in the food you are looking for. This is a quick way to see if the food is present in the program. If it is not, then add it to the new food suggestion.

I'm following the recommendations and I'm gaining weight.

If you are eating healthier with added vegetables, added omega 3s (ie: flax oil), it could be you are getting bloated because your body either doesn't have the enzymes to break down raw foods or the oil is too heavy for your liver. Also, if you are eating nuts or seeds that are not soaked in water over night (called germinating), then rinsed thoroughly, you will also feel a heavy sensation in the stomach. Anytime your system gets bloated or gaseous, you need to either avoid those foods or germinate the seeds and nuts. Bloating adds stress and will prevent weight loss. You could even retain water. If your bloating continues, contact your Health Coach for further suggestions. You may need digestive assistance while your body is healing.
